Good is the enemy of great. It’s easy to settle for less, because it’s exactly that, easy. Know what areas to be great in. Settle for good in areas so you can be great in others. You can’t be great in every area, so choose wisely which you want to be great in, then don’t settle for good. 

The difference between good and excellent is in the little things. It takes paying attention to the small details to go from good to excellent. It's a minor shift with a major impact. So start paying attention to the details, you can go from good to excellent. The small details often mean lots of work for a small details, but the cumulative effect is worth it.

What will you maintain, what will you let go of and what will you reach for?

Never has the world moved faster. Never has there been so many possibilities, so much potential. From where I am sitting now, I can literally reach around the entire globe. That's absolutely mind blowing. We now even take this unbelievable fact for granted. With all this speed, potential and possibilities though, there are still no shortcuts. To be successful, to do good work, to be effective still takes the same amount of work. What's changed is scalability and speed. But the required work hasn't changed. Many have mistaken these changes in potential as shortcuts though. No shortcuts have been discovered, the rewards for good work have just increased. Even with big rewards comes big responsibility, so in many ways things have not gotten any easier. Don't make the mistake many have in thinking technology and the connectedness of the world allows for shortcuts. If anything these global changes require better work to get noticed and to succeed. Analogy alert! Boats have anchors. Retail spaces have anchor tenants. Buildings have a foundation that may be similar to an anchor. What are your anchors though? Most of us have a few things that anchor us. Those who don’t, will have trouble being stable. Find some anchors and tie yourself to them.

The grass may be greener over yonder. And if it is, it's because the grass has been better tended to. It hasn't happened on it's own. Why can't the grass on your side be just as well tended to?
