Knowledge vs. Understanding
The Information Age has really levelled out the knowledge field. Just knowing something is unfortunately no longer the advantage it was. Understanding something though is better than simply knowing.
In the past, knowing something was a huge advantage. You could make a career of simply knowing something other people didn't know. Technology has levelled that out. Knowing something is no longer special.
You can know the temperature outside, but not understand how the weather works, how the temperature scale works. If you understand weather patterns and the temperature scale, you now know the temperature outside, and understand the underlying reasons for that temperature, you have more to bring to the table than someone who simply knows the temperature.
That may be a silly analogy, but with more and more automation replacing people's jobs, separating yourself from other candidates will be more and more challenging.
In the workforce, simply knowing something is not enough to separate you.
Having experience and understanding of something may be enough.
The next level up from understanding something would be the ability to innovate in that area.
I think the other quality that is becoming more and more important in the workforce is innovation.
Knowing something is a good start. Understanding something is important. Being able to innovate in a particular field is now what will separate the best from the rest.
As mentioned, workflows are becoming increasingly automated, but building innovation into automated processes is difficult. If you can innovate, you will stand out from the others.

In this time we live; no longer is it enough too just know, or even too understand; but too innovate.. A lot of pressure, I would say. But, to be good at something; requires exactly that. Innovation..........
ReplyDeleteThe wise man said "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." In your post, wisdom appears to be the ability to innovate, or to know what to do with your knowledge. You are so right. In the NT, there was a differentiation between the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom.
