New Year

Happy New Year! Let’s not wait for 2021 to get better, let’s make it happen!

Tell Them Now

If you love someone, tell them now. If someone did a good job, tell them now. If you appreciate someone, let them know! These little things can make someones day.

It's A Trade

Most things are a trade off. We trade our time for money. We trade problems for problems. We trade goods for money. We trade money for other money. We trade time for growth. You have to give something to get something. Nothing is free. We have to balance all these trades to make sure we don't end up with a deficit. I'm not talking about financially or that we get from others as much as we give. I'm talking about making sure we're balancing things so we don't give too much in one area and end up with a deficit. We can give too much time and not have enough to learn and grow. We can give too much financially and not have enough to meet our needs. Realizing everything is a trade should help balance what we're trading and receiving for the trade.

Your Environment

Your environment effects you. I was in a mall and the loud busy environment effected me. There was little I could do to effect the environment, but the environment effected me. Your environment is important in your health and life. Living in an unhealthy environment will make your life unhealthy. Change your environment to be what you need to sustain a healthy life. Your home should be your safe place and you can change it into a healthy, peaceful and safe space. You can't change every environment to be that, but you can change your primary environment to be so.

To Practice

Here’s some good things to practice at the end of 2020. - gratitude - contentment

Where's My Joy

The day after Christmas and where is my joy. It's not in gifts or just a single day. It's in the little moments of life that we can often overlook. The fresh snowfall today or the time spent playing with kids. Those are places to find joy. We don't have to look for a big celebratory day or gifts. It's in the little things and the joy they bring.

Merry Christmas

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Getting Ready

Getting ready for something often takes longer than the event. We can spend our lives getting ready for something and miss out on living.

A Reflector

Reflectors reflect light. They absorb darkness but reflect light. That can analogous for what we should look to be. We live in a world where there is a lot darkness, but we need to only reflect the light. Darkness is powerless against light. We don't need to be afraid of the darkness, but we do need to purposely reflect light. Let's be reflectors!

Fear and Lies

I recently heard it said fear is the result of believing a lie. That means fear is unwarranted. And in order to eliminate fear, we have to identify the underlying lie.

Winter Solstice

Today was winter solstice. The shortest day of the year. This means the days get longer and we get more sunlight after today.  Every day can be a solstice if needed. It’s only a decision away that tomorrow will be different or better.

The Cheapening Of Adjectives

It's hard to use proper adjectives nowadays. We say everything is "awesome" or "amazing" or "unbelievable". Very often, the things we are describing are really awesome, amazing or unbelievable though. How do you communicate something that is actually unbelievable today?  It's challenging. Maybe you drop the adjectives and become a compelling storyteller by explaining the purpose, magnitude or vision for something.

Is It Worth It?

Is this worth my energy? Or is this worth my finite resources (time, money, energy)? This is a question worth asking ones’ self often. There are so many energy drains out there that aren’t worth it.  Life is too short to throw away your finite resources. Use them for things that appreciate.

Your Heart

Life has a way of trying to make ones heart hard. Having a hard heart makes life bleak and hopeless. It takes the joy and life out of living. It's worth the work to keep your heart soft. Yeah, it may hurt sometimes, but it beats having a hard heart and losing out on the joy and beauty in life. You won't experience the joy and beauty in life with a hard heart.

Examine Routines

Routines are super important. Humans need routines in order to function successfully. But we need to examine our routines occasionally to make sure they’re good ones. We become what we repeat daily. We can let bad routines slip in which will have negative long term effects.

Sustainable and Repeatable

Is something is to be sustainable, it must be easily repeatable. It’s hard to sustain something that is difficult to repeat.

Big People, Big Circles

I've noticed something about big people. (not big in physical size, big in character and heart) They draw big huge, maybe even uncomfortable circles. Small people draw lines that cut people out. Big people draw bigger circles that draw even the small people in.

Control Of Information

Those who have control of information have the power. We’re seeing big tech hold more power than any other group.  They hold all the data and they control the flow of information.  It’s time to educate ourselves on privacy and alternate platforms. They only way these companies will be beat is if they lose their user base.  Research which search engine you should use, which email provider you should use and learn about the privacy settings on your mobile device.

A Reminder

Just a reminder that everyone has something to teach us. We just need to be willing to listen and learn from them.

Those Opposed

I’m sure I’ve blogged this idea before. But it just keeps being at the forefront of my thinking that people are so opposed to each other. There’s sides for everything and you have to take a side it seems. And I don’t see people opposed to each other reaching the other side very often.  How do you reach those opposed to you? Simple really. By loving them. It seems facts, data, anecdotes and logic don’t sway those opposed to you. But love is greater than all those things.

Trying Too Hard

There comes a point in trying where the law of diminishing returns takes over. You can actually try too hard. People have been called a “try hard”. That’s not a compliment either.  Learning when to let off the gas pedal is an art to be discovered.

Complex and Simple

When things get complicated, that's an indication to simplify what you can. When things get really simple, maybe you can add complexities to help things evolve. But don't add complexities to complexities. It's better to keep things simple than to add needless complexities.

The Future

The future is created by those who have a vision for it. It may not turn out 100% what the vision is, but it will be crafted by those with vision.  Everything we see started as an idea in someone’s head. The had vision and crafted it into reality.  We all have that power in our lives and our world.

Good

Sometimes you have to find the good. Sometimes you have to search harder than others. But you can always find good somewhere.

Test and Validate

This year has been a year of rash, arbitrary reactions. Mostly I'm referring to governments. There seems to be missing some sound logical and rational decision making. Fear has been the governing force over decision making. What would be different if we tested our responses and then validated the results? I'm sure our responses would be a lot more nuanced than they are.

Validation and Purpose

Where you derive validation from is where you will focus your energy and find your purpose.

Love

Something I’ve had to learn about love is it’s accepting people where they are. It doesn’t mean I always feel good about where they are; but accepting it and loving and caring for them is true love.

Your Best Defense

Your best defence is your actions. Not your words. Let your actions speak for you.

The Best Day Ever

If you could dream, what would the best day ever look like for you? The best day ever could only be the best day ever if it involved family and friends. The best day ever couldn't be a day with material gains or even solo experiences. The best day ever is only the best because it's shared with those who matter the most. The greatest experience wouldn't be as sweet without sharing it with others. I'm sure it's quite a feeling to climb Mount Everest, but I'm also sure it's even a better feeling doing it with a friend. We can make every day the best day ever when we're sharing it with the ones we love.

Break From The News

I took a two week break from the news and guess what? I didn't miss it and nothing changed in those two weeks. Makes me re-evaluate how much value there is in staying caught up on current affairs. I think there's value in knowing what's going on. But news can become entertainment and a time waster just like social media. I will be setting limits to my news consumption going forward. It doesn't take long until you get diminishing returns on news consumption.

Bad News and Good News

Why does bad news spread faster than good news? Why do we seem to get more enjoyment out of spreading bad rather than good news?  If each of us started only spreading good news and holding back the bad news, we would make our spheres of influence better. And those in that sphere would make their spheres better. Filter the bad out, spread the good. We don't need any more bad news in 2020, there's a shortage of good news and good news is more valuable.

Unfollow, Unsubscribe

GIGO - garbage in, garbage out. If you're following things that are putting garbage in your head, unfollow. If you're subscribed to things that are putting garbage in your head, unsubscribe. Life it too short to accept garbage or toxicity.  When you take in garbage and toxicity, soon you will be outputting garbage and toxicity. Only take things in that you want to output.

Balance and Breaking

Getting out of balance often precedes breaking. If it’s out of balance it needs to be corrected before it breaks.

Tree Grafts

Trees can go through a process called grafting. In short, the graft is done to make the tree better. It can be assumed that the graft wouldn’t feel good, but it will end up making the tree a better tree.  In life we have things grafted into our life that are unpleasant and unwanted. But these things can ultimately make us better if we take ownership of them and grow from them into something better.

Scars

"Scars come with living"  - Toby Mac There doesn't need to be shame associated with scars, they come with living. They can be beautiful. They can show that you've survived. They can show that you went through a battle being a victor. Scars come with living and we don't have to be ashamed of living.

Adversity Isn't Bad

People who never comes against adversity will become weak. Adversity makes trees strong. Adversity makes metal strong. Adversity similarly makes people strong. We don't need to go looking for adversity, it will come to us. And it's not something we should run from.

Anchors

What you’re anchored to will either save or wreck you. And if you have nothing to anchor to, you will at some point wreck.  Identity what you are anchored to and make sure it’s something that will save you.  Money, material and entertainment are things that will fail you when anchored to them.

Part and Parcel

Many things come with a good side and bad side. What do I mean by that? You may have a dream job, but it's gonna have some things that you dislike or things that make it difficult. Good things come from difficulty. Wisdom comes from pain. Strength comes from pain.  "Bad" things are part and parcel of good things. Going through the "bad" is necessary to get to the good.

Purpose Over Expedience

"Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient ". Rule #7 from 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B Peterson.

Covid has Changed The World

Covid has changed the world but we still don’t know the full extent of how it will change. But opportunities will present themselves as change occurs. What opportunities will open up as commerce and business change? What opportunities will present themselves as communication and relationships change?

Proverb of The Mouth and Tongue

From the book of Proverbs: "Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble."  How much less trouble would be caused if this was learned? How many less instances of trouble would I have been in had I heeded this advice? Hopefully we get better with this as we age and mature, but the tongue is truly the most unruly part of humans and the most difficult to tame. If you can tame your tongue you can tame yourself.

People

People are more similar than they are different. We're all unique and special bound together by similarities. Even those who are a challenge to relate to are more similar than different to us.

Until They Feel Understood

It's unlikely somebody can be helped until they first feel understood. People don't generally accept they're wrong until they feel like they have at least been understood.

The Need For Sleep

Everyone needs different amounts of sleep, but the fact is we all need good sleep. Most people need 8 hours of sleep give or take, but some people can get by on less. But they still need good sleep. If you're not sleeping good, you're not going to be living good during the day. There are plenty of good tips a quick Duck Duck Go search will help you discover. Getting good sleep is a must, figure out how to get it :)

My Description

An interesting thought exercise is to think about how I would describe myself to someone I just met.  Now think about if I could try and describe myself from the perspective of someone who knew me well to someone I just met.   How close would those two descriptions like up? There’s probably a lot to learn in that answer.

Emotions

Emotions are important but they shouldn’t be a driver for us. We should be aware of them but they shouldn’t be our driver. Because for many of us that will be a fairly unstable ride :)

The Gouge In the Armour

Some people delight themselves in finding the gouge in someone else's armour. I've had to confront that tendency in myself. And it's a horrible way to live and experience life. There's little skill in pointing out a gouge. There's much skill in pointing out a fix for the gouge. There's also much skill in pointing out untapped talents.  If you find a gouge, try and find all the areas where their armour is strong. There may be a gouge because they've been through battles.

Try To Make The Best

So many people live below what they could be. Simply because they don’t even try to make the best of their situation. They let life dictate to them their happiness. Rather they should dictate to life their happiness.  It’s one of the great secrets to life, that you can take control of it.  There is a video of Steve Jobs talking about this that inspired this post :)

Shortcuts

Shortcuts don't lead to success. Doing hard things and doing hard work leads to success. Beware of any proposed shortcut to a big goal.

A Conflict of Experts

2020 has brought us many interesting things. One though is the conflict of experts. The experts don't seem to be able to agree on anything, science, medicine, politics. They haven't been able to predict anything with consensus or accuracy. This conflict has led to some credibility and trust erosion in the experts. This year has brought many things to light, and this is something else that has brought to light. Many experts are simply just doing their best, but don't know everything. Information overload has also contributed to this. Filtering data and information has become one of the most critical skills for people to learn.

Quality of Life

The quality of your life will never exceed the quality of your thought life.

Christmas Is Coming

In our household, it's already full on Christmas. Christmas is the best way to close out this year of 2020. With gratefulness and generosity. It's been a tough year on the whole world but we should still close it out with gratitude. Hopefully this year is less about merchandise and more about people and gratitude.

Endurance

The story of the ship the Endurance is one of the most incredible stories of endurance and tenacity. It’s something that humans can endure the amount of hardship and difficulty that those men did. Endurance is an incredible skill and should be worked on.

Go For A Walk

Did you know just going for a walk can really improve your health? I was reading about 8 ways walking changes your brain for the better. It lowers your risk of developing depression. It improves your overall cognitive functioning. Walking releases endorphins. It releases the protein BDNF. It helps with mental and physical fatigue. It strengthens your Hippocampus. It improves creativity. It increases blood flow to your brain. Link to article here:  https://www.bustle.com/p/8-ways-walking-changes-your-brain-for-the-better-according-to-science-10077769

Truth Quote

I measure the strength of a spirit by how much truth it can take. Nietzsche

Do Your Best

The company Apple isn't always the first to market, but often they're the best. Trying to be first is less important than doing your best.

Systems

There’s no perfect system. There’s always weak spots or loopholes. Yes, trust the system to a degree, but also be critical of the system at the same time.  The current election mayhem in the US was the cause of this thought.

Hope and Life

When people lose hope they lose their life. Hope is an important part of life. Always keep hope, never let it go. It's an important ingredient to life.

The Best Way To Fight

The US Presidential election campaign had me thinking. What's the best way to fight your opponent. I'm not convinced putting them down is the best way. I submit that if someone would instead paint a better picture than their opponent, that would be far more powerful. Point to something better rather than trying to tear down your opponent.

Big Moments

Not every moment is equal. Tomorrow is a big day in the United States, and because of the power of the US, it's a big day for the whole world. Enjoy every moment and take in the big moments.

Sunset

Tonight was a beautiful sunset. I don't know what you could have paid to create something that beautiful. What if we're looking at beauty and happiness wrong? Maybe we're guilty of treating those things like a commodity rather than something priceless.

Truth As A Mirror

Truth is like a mirror. Truth can be a sword too. Truth can also be love. But in helping ourselves, truth is a mirror. Winston Churchill said "People occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing even happened".  When confronted with truth as a mirror, we are forced to see ourselves as we actually are, not what we think we are. This truth can cause us to hurry off and ignore what we've seen or it can cause us to look ourselves straight in the mirror and level up.

Running and Pace

In doing lots of running I've learned pace is important. If you start too fast you may not be able to complete, or you will slow down to a crawl. But if it's a short run, you can start fast and keep up the pace. On a long run, you need to slow down and maintain a more constant pace. Pace yourself in life too. Don't go too fast or too slow. Find the pace that works for you and will allow you to endure to the end.

The Journey

We need something to focus on. We need a destination, or maybe we could call it a goal. Without a purpose, people get lost. One thing that's necessary to learn though is to learn to enjoy the journey. It's gonna take twists and turns, ups and downs, and you have to learn to enjoy it. Because the journey is always full of surprises, both good and bad, you have to learn to enjoy the ride.

Isolation Isn't A Good Place

Isolation has become quite a common word this year. Isolation is a terrible thing. I read a quote today that said  "We discover who we are, not in isolation, but in connection. Isolation leads to self-deception". It's no wonder the world is seeing so much craziness this year. We have deeply messed with the social order that civilization has existed upon. Social distancing and isolation are causing a ruckus. Don't allow yourself to be isolated. Find some good, honest friends and connect with them as much as possible.

Bitter or Better

One letter difference but two drastically different outcomes. 2020 has been full of difficulties for so many people. Will the circumstances make us bitter or better? We do have a choice in the matter.

Teachers

The best teachers are still students. They’re constantly updating themselves and learning. In order to teach you have to be a good student. And it’s best to remain a student even when you’re a teacher.

Force

Force is something that should be used sparingly. If you have to resort to force some thing(s) have gone wrong previously in the process.

Being Intentional

This quote I read today was a good reminder of living intentional.  “No carelessness in your actions. No confusion in your words. No imprecision in your thoughts”  - Marcus Aurelius

Don't Spare A Kind Word

Be that person who is quick to give a kind word. I can think of times in my life when someone told me "you're gonna be a success" or "you got what it takes" and it actually made a difference. What if there's someone in your life that needs to hear those words?

The Beauty of Art

The beauty of art is that there's no formula to it. It is somewhat subjective. Not everyone appreciates art of course, but that just means art is subjective. An abstract painting can mean something to someone and nothing to someone else. And that's the beauty of art, not everyone will appreciate a musical piece, but those who do will appreciate it a lot.

The Complex

There is great utility in making the complex simple. Arguably, this is one reason Apple has been a successful company. It's an extraordinary skill to distill complexities into simpler forms. It's like a combination of the following skills: - Analytical - Communication - Logic - Pattern recognition

Putting Others First

Instincts tell us to look out for number one. And we need to. It’s a life sustaining instinct. So putting others before us doesn’t generally come natural. It takes work and practice to do so.  When we learn to put others first, we learn a great secret in a fulfilling life.

Dreams Can Come True

Dreams can come true. There's two keys in making that happen. 1. Your heart will eventually get what it wants. So your heart needs to be set on it. 2. Work. Dreams take lots of work to achieve. If you're not willing to put in the work, you likely won't achieve your dream.

Bad Isn't Always Bad

We don't go looking for things to get bad for us. But inevitably we go through tough things. Tough things that we may even label as bad. But there's so much strength to gain when things get "bad". There's so many lessons to learn when things get "bad". As former SEAL, Jocko says, "when things get bad... GOOD!" Good because it's an opportunity.

What Feels Better?

This will tell you a lot about yourself. Ask yourself and honestly answer, what feels better, to receive something or to give something? Work towards being a giver, not a receiver. The truest blessing is in giving not receiving.

The President

I realized why people hate the President or Prime Minister so much. It's because they want to blame that person for all the problems they either have or see. Rather than taking responsibility for their problems or thee problems they see, it's easier to blame someone else. And no better person than the one at the top.

The Price of Wisdom

I heard it said that the price of wisdom is pain. I think that's quite true. Wisdom never comes cheap or easy. It usually comes through some tough life experiences. And some people don't come out of those life experiences with wisdom. They come out with bitterness, resentment or sometimes just end up defeated. But there is wisdom to gain in these situations. So in pain or difficult circumstances, fleece all the wisdom you can from it.

Out of Joy

The best way to do something it out of joy. Doing it out of duty can’t compare.

Life Is

Life is... what you make it. Both bad and good things happen to both bad and good people. But life is still what you make it.

Ignoring Problems

Ignoring problems never helps deal with the problem. We don't need to seek out every problem and deal with it. But for problems that we're connected to, ignoring them won't help. Problems tend to grow until dealt with. You'll never be problem free, but it's best to deal with problems as quickly as possible. Ignoring problems is one way to feed them.

Being Down

There's a song that has a lyric that says "I've been down so long, being down don't bother me". Life has highs and lows. But you can't live in the lows too long. You have to figure out how to get out of that low. Lows become ruts fast. You can't stay down long, because it just get harder to get out of the low. Make sure being down bothers you a whole lot. Being down should never be accepted. Fight being down and get up!

The Lowest Common Denominator

Negativity is possibly the lowest common denominator for humans. It's not a good place to live. It's not a good place to connect with others. If you're connecting based on negativity that's a low denominator (or something to share in common). Raise the bar and connect on as high of a level as possible.

Nightmares and Daydreams

Nightmares can be scary. But they're often not based in reality.  Daydreams can be more scary because they're based in reality. I'm talking about allowing your self to dream big. They can be more frightening. Many people don't day dream big, because it's too frightening.

Compelling

Compelling is the strongest form of motivation. You can push people to motivate them, but when you can find a way to compel them, that’s the best method.

A Kind Word

A kind word can go a long way. If you wanna help someone, try a sincere, kind word.

Conflict

There is such thing as healthy conflict. It's just a tough thing to keep it healthy. It takes two mature parties to keep conflict healthy. This goes for politics, groups, relationships and couples. Once conflict becomes unhealthy it's best to disengage until it can be healthy again. Healthy conflict can be a very productive tool.

Want It To Grow?

If you want it to grow, give it energy.  This works two ways though. If you give the wrong things energy, they sure enough will grow. Don't put energy into the wrong things and put all your energy into the right things.

First of The Month

You can find lots of firsts in life. Today was the first of the month of October. A perfectly good to start something new or possibly stop something not worthwhile. There’s plenty of opportunities for starts, to start over again in life.  Here’s a good way to start again... say sorry. That’s a good way to start over.  Here’s another way to start again. Get up the next day and adjust what went wrong or what you didn’t like about today.  Here’s another faster way, start the next breath you take. Don’t even wait for the calendar to turn or the sun to rise the next day. Just start with your next breath.

More Means Less Room

More doesn’t equal better. Many times we think more is good and more is better than less. But that’s not always the case.  If you jam pack something, there’s no room left. No room left for something better. No room left for change or margin of error.  So often, less is more.  Less removes complexity. Less pairs down to what’s necessary and valuable.

It's Impossible..

It's only impossible until someone does it. It takes a determined courageous person to defy impossibilities. They can see a way when nobody else can. Such people have invented things like airplanes, light bulbs, phones. They have broken records of running, speed and endurance. Don't let impossibilities deter you from achieving great things.

The Important of Faithfulness

If you can be faithful over a few things you will be made ruler over many.

Recognize The Season

There's four seasons in the year as far as weather goes. You have to recognize the season or else you work will be futile. You don't plant during harvest season. You don't reap during planting season. You can't work against the season. Your work will be futile. In life, there's plenty of different seasons. You need to recognize when season your in, or those in your care are in. Doing something in the wrong season may make a good intentioned action not work at all. Just  like the sower who sowed just before winter. Recognize what season you're in and take the appropriate action for that season. The author of the bible book of Ecclesiastes said (paraphrased): there's a time to plant and a time to reap, a time to break down and a time to build up, a time to gather a time to cast away, a time to rend and a time to sew...  Recognize the season.

Quick Decisions

Quick decisions are good for low impact situations. But slow decisions are best for high impact situations.  Being slow probably pays more often than being fast. But there’s times to be both.

A Sure Thing

One sure thing is that things will change. You can always be certain that things will change. How do you handle change? We seem wired to not love change, but it's part of life. Those better at adapting with change have a less tumultuous life. Those who can learn to take advantage of change are successful.

Things Change Fast

Back in time things changed slow. Long before you and I were born. If your parents farmed, than you farmed and usually lived the same life as your parents. Little changed generation to generation. Farming equipment was the same generation to generation. There wasn't such thing as new technology as we know it today. It looks hundreds and sometimes thousands of years for major advances in civilization. Fast forward to today. We’re in an age of rapid change. The life I grew up like 30 years ago is vastly different from the life my kids are growing up in. I venture my grandchildren will yet again grow up in a vastly different world.  Change is accelerating, thanks to technology. It's hard to stay on top of the latest. What are some lessons to learn in this? Here's a few. - Try to be understanding of people younger than you. They live in a different world from the one you grew up in. - You don't have to jump on every single new thing that comes along. - Learn to value qualit...

Self Control

It’s one of the most valuable skills to work on. When we work on self, we make the world a better place. People without self control are dangerous to themselves and people in contact with them.

Showing Up

Sometimes the people who succeed are the ones who simply show up. By this I mean, the person who learns how to be faithful has a huge advantage over one who doesn’t.

Ideas

I struggled writing a blog tonight. Ideas come in bunches and sometimes they don’t come at all. I’m learning to write down my ideas as they come so they aren’t lost. Had I written down more ideas though, I wouldn’t have struggled tonight. Reminder to self: do better at writing down ideas when they decide to come.

The Great Hang Up

The greatest hang up is usually the same for everyone, that being, the past. We get so hung up by what has already happened that we are slowed to a standstill. Letting go of the past is one of the most rewarding things you can give yourself. It's just much harder to do than just say. Letting go of the past opens up the future though. You have to let go in order to move forward.  (this is referring to letting go of the bad, you want to always hold dear to the good)

10 Months Old

My son is 10 months old and he’s teaching me some things that I’ve maybe forgotten as an adult.  - Get over things fast. He can be upset in one moment and immediately gets over it when Momma holds him or he forgets what’s bothered him. I don’t get over things so quickly and easily.  - Keep exploring and pay attention. An airplane catches his attention. A ceiling fan mesmerizes him. He’s curious about what every little sound and action is. And he’s learning super fast because of it. I tune out so much and don’t pay attention to all that’s going on. I wonder what lessons I’m missing by not paying attention? - He’s very grateful. He gets excited when he tried something new. He’s smiles widely at strangers. He laughs so purely. He sleeps peacefully. He isn’t ashamed to make happy sounds anytime or anywhere. He relies on other people with no pride. He trusts others. What great qualities for me to keep working on!

Equals

Not every day is equal, but every day you can put in an equal effort.

Problems

Your biggest problem is exactly that, the biggest problem you are facing. And in that we forget there are people facing bigger problems than we are.  That doesn’t diminish our problem, but it does provide perspective.

If I Didn’t Learn Anything

If I didn’t learn anything today I wasn’t looking hard enough. Or listening hard enough.  If I’m not learning I’m not growing. I don’t want to waste a day without growing.  Paying attention is the way to grow.

Heros

My hero's aren't people you would read about in the news. They won't likely be mentioned in history books. They aren't even well knows. But they're people who have good character, who are faithful and positive. They're people who have endured and shows strength when it was hard to be strong. They're full of love and kindness. They're people to look up to because they make the world a better place and are true examples of what to be.

Your Heart

The heart is the steering wheel of a human being. What the heart wants, it will eventually get. That's good reason to constantly check yourself and make sure what's in your heart is good. Because it's eventually going to manifest itself. You can't hide what's in your heart forever. Best to uproot anything bad the moment you notice it.

Hardest Person To See

Often the hardest person to see clearly is ourselves. It's easy to see other people and see faults. But are we so good at seeing our faults? It's not so easy to spot our faults because we've grown into them maybe. If you see a fault in someone else, it's a good opportunity to check yourself honestly for that fault in yourself. Spouses, parents and close friends are also good sources for honest feedback to help you see the hardest to see person, yourself.

Solutionist and Problemists

You can reduce people into two categories but here goes :) There’s solutionists and problemists.  Solutionists find a solution to every problem. Problemists find a problem for every solution.

September 11

Today is September 11th and I’ve been seeing tributes go out all day for the events of 9/11.  I can still feel all the feelings of that day. That day changed the world. It just takes one day and drastic lasting changes can be made. Use tomorrow for good.

Your Words

Sticks and stone may hurt my bones but words can never hurt me. That's what we used to say as children to name callers. But it wasn't true. Sticks and stones can't do the depth of damage words can. Your words are powerful tools of creation. You can create realities more real than actual physical reality with words. Words can calm violence or it can set off violence. Words can build and they can destroy. Your words are extremely important. Be extremely careful what you say as you are building your reality as you speak. It starts as a thought, but the thought takes on reality when it's spoken.

You Live With Yourself

You’re the only person you spend every second with. That’s a lot of time. So if you don’t like something about yourself, change it. Life is too long to live with something you don’t like and can change. Make yourself into someone you enjoy living with.

Learn How You Learn

How do you learn? If you're unsure, it's best to learn how you learn. Are you an audio learner or someone who needs demonstration? Or do you prefer to read to learn. Or maybe a mix. If you can identify how you learn, you can fast track your learning by skipping the learning methods that don't help you.

Living Intentional

There's two ways to live: - Intentional - Unintentional You can liken intentional living to having a rudder on your ship. Unintentional living is like sailing rudderless and just following the current. Unintentional living doesn't lead to good places and it a waste. Intentional living is difficult but rewarding.

Rain

You can let the rain keep you from living or you can dance in the rain. You will get wet, but you'll be living.

Your Attitude

One's attitude is one of the better indicators of how they will do. Your attitude is something always within your control. It constantly takes adjustment, but it's still fully within your control. Your attitude you either be your best ally or its can be your worst enemy. How do you get a good attitude? Constant adjustments. It's not an overnight process, but it's an every day process.

Less Is More

I’ve found that more often than not, that less is better than more. When more adds complexity them it’s too much   Where this isn’t true though is in giving free things like love.

The More You Know

I've seen a trend in people who know more. They're less certain, or at a minimum they're much slower to judgement. Know it alls jump to conclusions and judgements and they actually don't know more. They just think they know more.

Inside

Nobody can force you to change inside. No circumstance can either. That's the one thing that you have complete control over. So what does that mean? It means to keep your heart right. You will eventually follow your heart, so make sure it's right. Nobody can change your heart inside of you.

How Far Have You Come

There's a difference between looking back and seeing how far you've come. Looking back doesn't really have any benefit. It often leaves us dwelling on things we can't change. But it's good to know how far you've come.

The Balance of Repetition

We need repetition to learn. Any people need varying degrees of repetition to learn something. But over repetition can cause someone to tune out. So there's a balance of how much repetition is useful.

The Linear Path

We like linear paths in life. The ones that are clear cut in which direction they’re going.  But life’s paths are never linear. They are full of stops, starts turns and backtracks.  These are the paths that lead to growth though. Linear paths wouldn’t help us grow.

Beauty In The Simple Things

Life can get so fast paced and our minds can get so preoccupied with work, relationships, problems, goals and on and on... that we miss the beauty in the simple things. We’re surrounded by beauty, but sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees.

To Skin A Cat

Who wants to skin a cat? No me for sure! :) There's a saying though that says there's 1000 ways to skin a cat. It obviously means there's probably 1000 different ways to accomplish the same task. I've learned that if someone chooses a different way to accomplish the same task as me, that it's fine. Maybe my way is better, maybe it's not. But if they get the task done and aren't struggling, let them be.  If they're struggling, then help out :)

Victory

The position of victory is never reached by accident. You will never accidentally fall into victory.  Victory only comes through vision, determination, hard work and steadfast resolve.

Fighting

Fighting is good thing when you’re fighting the right things.  Fighting people is never good. But fighting against evil, negativity and injustice is always good.  Save your fight for the right things.

Do Hard Things

This is some of the best advice you could ever give or receive. It's simple, "do hard things". They need to be the right things. It can be hard to beat your head against a wall and entirely useless. But there are many hard problems that need to be solved. There are many hard tasks that bring great value. There's little value in easy. If you're always looking for the easy path you're selling yourself short.

You Repeat

You repeat mistakes that you don't learn from. The most times you repeat the mistake the less chance there is of learning from it. The danger is you will incorporate the mistake into your thinking of what's right.

Effort is Relative

Effort is relative. Sometimes it takes the greatest effort to do something. Other times it takes little effort.  Effort is relative to how much strength you have. More strength, less effort. Less strength, more effort.  Build strength so you don’t need to constantly exert maximum effort for the same tasks.

The Important Things

The important things are not things, but they’re people. And the important people are the ones you’re closest too. Everyone is important but your family and closest friends are of utmost importance.  Pursue things that benefit you and your closest relationships. Don’t pursue stuff. Pursue what has impact.

Knowing Your Limits

You have to know your limits. The reason is twofold: 1. You have to know where your limits are so you don't go past them. 2. You have to know where your limits are so you can go past them. There's times to stay within your limits and there's times to push past them. Knowing the difference is wisdom.

Battle Tested

You find out what someone is made of when they go through the battle. A battle will show you what you're made of. Let the battle be an opportunity for personal growth and strengthening. The strongest materials go through the most pressured and hot procedures to make them strong. It's no different for people.

Make A Change

If you want to change a habit or create a new one, do it in increments. There's a time and a place for going all-in or going cold-turkey. But generally you're more successful when you do things incrementally. Don't bite off more than you can chew. Don't try and boil the ocean. It's an exercise in frustration.

Don’t Be A Cynic

Don’t be a cynic. A cynic doesn’t contribute. They only exist to tear people and things down.  If you want to be a contributor you can’t be a cynic.

To Understand Someone

To understand someone you need to know their story. You can come to a limited knowledge by observing or even talking to them. But to truly understand someone you have to know their story. I saw a couple people arguing in a line. I would wager if they knew each others story there wouldn't have been an argument though. If we can look at everyone through that lens (of needing to know their story) we will be a whole lot more merciful on people.

A Victim Of Your Own Success

You can be a victim of your own success. Usually you become a victim through complacency.  Success very often causes us to feel comfortable and complacency creeps in. Complacency is the biggest threat to success.

Fighting The Natural

If we stop nature will take over. Metal will rust as it returns to a more natural state. Weeds will take over your garden as is returns to a more natural state. Humans too have to watch that our natural state doesn’t overtake us. We all have those natural traits that we have to fight. It may be natural to get angry and we have to make sure we don’t allow that to overtake us. We may naturally be introverted and have to make sure that doesn’t overcome us.  Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good. We have to fight against nature all the time. And by doing nothing, you’re letting nature win. You have to be proactive again nature.

Have A Plan

You will fail if you don't have a plan. But you have to also know your plan will need to be adjusted. So... Have a plan, and plan on it changing. But don't skip the plan.

Until You Try

You don't know if you can do it until you try. And if you can't you've gained experience and are more likely to be able to next time.

You Can

You can, if you want to. It's usually more a matter of wanting to rather than being able to. Don't allow yourself to be lied to with "I can't" when the real reason is "I don't want to".

Dare

Daring is necessary. You have to dare to dream. It’s daring because your dreams can be dashed.  You have to dare to step out. It’s a dare because you could fall.  If you don’t dare, you don’t go anywhere though.

Bad Day?

I found the anecdote for a bad day. It’s called gratefulness. In fact gratefulness is the anecdote to many other conditions like: ungratefulness, loss, physical ailments...

Reserving Judgment

I’ve learned judgment should be reserved until all facts are know.  But it’s easy to jump to conclusions and then judgments. But it’s flawed to do so.

Perception

We all see the same thing(s) more or less. But what causes us to have different views on things? I think our world view is our lens into what we see. And the world view is also called our perception (how we perceive things). Our perception is developed by what we’ve been taught, who we surround ourselves with and what we consume.  This means we can shape our perceptions. If we have a negative, pessimistic world view, we should try and start shaping that to be more positive. By changing what we consume or who we spend time with, we can accomplish that.

The Most Important Time To Stand

The most important time to stand tall is when you don't feel like standing. Because that's when it's most important.

A Pretty Amazing Discovery

It used to be thought that you couldn't change your thinking and mind. It was thought you wore patterns into your brain that couldn't be changed. But then something pretty amazing was discovered, that being, you can in fact change your brain. It takes three basic things: 1. Willingness. Of course you have to be willing to allow new thoughts to shape you. 2. Focus or Pressure. You have to focus on something to learn or change. Another way this can happen is through an intense situation which I've called pressure. 3. Good sleep. Good sleep is when the new information and paths actually take shape. Without the proper rest this process isn't possible. Don't like something about yourself or your thinking? Then don't accept it. That's the focus and the pressure. Re-learn or re-think it. Then get good sleep. Then repeat. You can form a new way of thinking!

Always Do A Good Job

I've seen one quality that sets apart good employees from bad ones. The good ones ALWAYS do a good job, no matter the circumstances. Even if they're unable to know everything, they have the problem solving skills to find the right information.  You don't have to know everything, you just have to know how to deliver a good product. That could be an email, a presentation or a phone call. Always do a good job. Even on the most meaningless seeming tasks like sweeping a floor. Set the standard of always doing a good job, no matter what you're doing.

Free

People love the word free. You tell people free food will be at an event and you likely will have a good turnout. We love giveaways and the idea of lotteries. The thing is, nothing like this is actually free. There's a cost to all these things. It's good to remember when you hear the word free to think a bit. Think about if it's free for you, then who is paying. Sometimes you're paying with your own personal information or privacy. Because your "free" email account isn't actually free. What's interesting is that the truest free things are the more important. Joy is free. Kindness is free. A smile is free. Those are the type of free things we should focus on.

What You Wish For

What you wish for doesn’t always give you what you want.  What you want and what you get can often end up different things.  Meaning of this, be careful what you wish for. You may get it, but it may be more than what you wanted.

Problem Free

It’s a waste of time and energy to try and get your life problem free.  Doesn’t mean you should accept problems. I just wrote about confronting things before they get too large.  But don’t set the expectation that you will be problem free. We’re always trading problems for problems.  And this isn’t a negative and defeatist post. Because I think we need problems. We need them for improvement reasons. We need them to stay sharp and engaged.

Appeasement

Appeasement is only a delay tactic. Appeasement isn't a true solution. If you're appeasing someone or something, know fully that you haven't put an end to the issue.

Confront Without Being Confrontational

It's advantageous to confront things early. But you don't have to become a confrontational person to do that. With tact and wisdom you can learn to confront things and nip them in the bud. The long you leave issues, the bigger they will get. You don't want to be the person going around putting everyone in their place. That's not what this is about. But you do want to be the person managing your problems before they get too large.

Fire With Fire

If you fight fire with fire, that’s a great escalation strategy.  If you want to deescalate though, fight with the opposite approach. Fight fire with kindness.  Fight anger with calmness.  Fight lies with truth.  Fight injustice with justice.  Fight partiality with impartiality.

Neighbours

Here’s an interesting thought experiment.  What if we treated everyone with a need as if they were our neighbour? Of course we don’t have unlimited resources to help an unlimited amount of people. But what about the people we know, what if we treated them as neighbours? I think our circles would be a lot stronger. A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link. What if the chain strengthened that weakest link? The whole chain would be stronger.

Our Steering Wheel

What would be the human equivalent of a steering wheel? I think the heart is the steering wheel of human beings. What our heart desires it will eventually get. Even if it takes a long time. Our hearts desires will manifest themselves.  A wise man once said (Solomon in his Proverbs) “above all else guard the heart, for it determines the course of your life”.

Bad Season

There’s no denying we’re in a bad season right now. But you can’t have a good season without a bad one.  And this bad season will pass, you just have to hold on and do your best go get through it. It will make the good season all the much more better.

Your Thought Life

Your actual life will never be better than your thought life. It's important to get your thought life right. If it's not right, your life won't be right. Even if things aren't going great in real life, you have to get your thought life right. Because it can make all the difference when things aren't going right. Get the mind right and other things will follow.

Bridging Gaps

You can’t bridge gaps is you’re constantly taking sides. Don’t feel forced to take a side on every issue. When you’ve taken a side it’s very hard to reach someone on the other side.

Easy vs Hard

We want easy. Who ever choses the hard path? But the value isn't really in the easy. The value is in the hard. Currently, times could be looked at as hard. That means there is so much to glean right now. When it's easy street, there's little to glean. Confront the hard things are you will gain the most value.

Goals

I think goals are important. Goals are things we aim at. If you're not aiming at something, you're going to be in big trouble. You need short term and long term goals. A long term goal will seem impossible without some short term goals. But short terms goals will seem futile without a larger long term goal. So have both! Make them realistic but big! Then aim for them. Make sure they align with your passions and skills. You will do great things if you line these things up.

Blind Spots

How do you find your blind spots? Through real honest and maybe tough conversations with people who love you.

Learning

Learning isn’t a linear task. There’s stops, starts, ups and downs. There’s setbacks and trip ups.  But I’m each of those scenarios there’s always room to keep learning and growing.

My Reminder About Joy

If I decide to have joy (and joy is a decision) nothing or nobody can take that away.

Best Medicine

We’re told laughter is the best medicine. Life’s too short to spend around miserable people.  Spend it with happy people so you can easily laugh.

The Iceberg

We see icebergs. Only about 10% of icebergs are visible. We see something and assume we know everything about it, but we don't. We've only seen 10%. You can only make few assumptions when you are seeing 10% of a picture. If we dig we can see a bigger part of the picture and make better judgments. In every situation, in every person, it's good to remember you're only seeing 10% of the picture. If you speak and walk with them you may see a larger part. Walk a mile in their shoes and then complete the picture you have of them.

You're An Imitator

People are imitators. We imitate those closest to us. The saying I've heard goes something like "show me your three closest friends and I'll show you who are". You will imitate those you are closest to. So make sure those closest to you are worth imitating.

What You Do Every Single Day

If you wrote down the things you consistently do, you will find out who you are. I mean the things you do almost every single day. Those are the most important things you do. Not the one-off's but the little things you do every single day. Those are the most important things.

Illusion of Control

From Wikipedia: The illusion of control is the tendency for people to overestimate their ability to control events. We are beings who enjoy being in control. We're uncomfortable with the unknown. We're uncomfortable with things that are beyond out control. We like to think we can control things, but many things are out of out control. We sometimes lie to ourselves and think we can control something. This is sort of like the illusion of control. The moral of this post is that much is out of our control, no matter how hard we try.  But our actions, thoughts and words are always in our control.  We can't control what happens around us, but we can control what happens within and what comes out from us. Don't try and act like you can control things you can't, control yourself and by that you are exercising ultimate power.

Boredom

My 7 year old daughter will sometimes tell me she’s bored. I say to her “good!”  Boredom can lead to creativity.  But don’t let boredom lead to idleness. Idleness is where you can get in some big trouble.  Turn boredom into creativity, exploring or learning.

Good Things Becoming Bad

I am once again reminded how good things can become bad. Too much of a good thing isn't endless goodness. At some point it loses what made it good. Case in point, social justice. Of course social justice is important. I don't think you would find a sane person to deny that. However, what is being done in the name of social justice today isn't productive or even good. A good cause has gone too far. Be cautious when you find something good. You may drive the good right into a ditch if it's not carefully used.

Some Good Advice

Some good advice from "12 Rules For Life" by Jordan Peterson. "Aim up. Pay attention. Fix what you can fix. Don't be arrogant in your knowledge. Strive for humility, because totalitarian pride manifests itself in intolerance, oppression, torture and death. Become aware of your own insufficiency - your cowardice, malevolence, resentment and hatred. Consider the murderousness of your own spirit before you dare accuse others, and before you attempt to repair the fabric of the world. Maybe it's not the world that's at fault. Maybe it's you. You've failed to make the mark. You've missed the target. You've fallen short of the glory of God. You've sinned. And all of that is your contribution to the insufficiency and evil of the world. And, above all, don't lie. Don't lie about anything, ever. Lying leads to Hell."

Your Mind

"If you don’t rule your mind it can rule you" - Eliud Kipchoge (world record holder for fastest marathon time)

It's Too Easy

Everything is too easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.

Weeds

Weeds are much easier to deal with when they first appear. They grow fast and choke the good things you're trying to grow. If you let the weeds grow they will soon overtake everything else you're growing. Eventually they will kill everything else you're growing. Learn to deal with the weeds in life quickly, before they kill the good things in your life. Weeds are bad habits. Weeds are bad attitudes. Weeds are bitterness. Weeds are resentment.

Hyperbole

Try to use precise speech. Avoid hyperbole. If you want people to trust what you say, avoid using hyperbole. Practice using very precise speech. Not only will people tend to trust you more, you will be a better communicator.

Don't Get Drawn In

Don't get drawn into battles that aren't your own. Help people who need help. But don't get drawn into meaningless battles that you don't need to. There's battles happening everywhere right now. If you get drawn into them you will waste all your energy on something that likely you can't even make a difference in.

It Can't Happen To Me

So many things we think won't happen to us. But they could. Live life like it could end at any time.

Leaders Can’t Win

A leaders job isn't to win. It's to do what's right and best. Politicians try to win. But leaders don't worry about votes and winning. They care about doing the right thing. In that, they can't ever win. Whatever they do will be criticized, no matter what. There will always be someone who doesn't like what you've done or said, but you still do the right thing. The trick to winning, say nothing and do nothing :) Which isn't a very good plan at all.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent

Society has taken a turn. It used to be innocent until proven guilty, but now many are guilty until proven innocent. If they even get a chance at defence. This will lead to many bad things. When and where you have influence, believe the best in people. Let them be innocent until proven guilty. There's always more to every story than you see or immediately can know. And remember, you're not perfect either. Even if they're guilty, are they willing to change or make amends?

Erasing History

I'm hearing a lot about erasing history recently. It's a horrible idea. Good or bad, history is important. We can either build from it or learn from it. Erasing it removes the ability to learn or build from it. The same people wanting to erase history are the ones trying to dig up all the mistakes from peoples history and cancel them.  This is history being used wrong. The past is the past. Learn from it, move on. If apologies need to be made, make them! We're stuck with our history, so make the best of it. If we've made mistakes, use the history to warn people to not make them again. Don't use history to malign people. Don't erase history that doesn't resonate with your ethos or values even. Learn how to use history for the betterment of yourself and society.

Level Heads

Eventually cooler heads will prevail.  The ones with level heads have a huge advantage against those who don't.

Happy Canada Day

Happy Canada Day! Our country isn't perfect, no country is. But we're doing a lot of things right. It's easy to be a critic, it's a lot harder to solve problems. If you're not going to be a problem solver, don't bother being a critic. It seems in lot's of free countries people are taking for granted how good they have it. We're seeing it turn into hatred against the country they've been raised in, simply because the Country isn't perfect. Do people want to move to your country from less fortunate countries? Then you're probably doing a lot of things right.  I'm thankful for our Country today. I'm concerned about many things, but nonetheless grateful.

Perform For Yourself

Perform for yourself as you would for 10,000 people. Do your best work even if you're gonna be the only one to see. If you learn to only perform for others, you won't put in the work and quality necessary to succeed.

It Depends On What You're Looking At

Chaos? Opportunity? Stars? Bars? What you see right depends on what you're looking at. There's a lot of noise happening. A lot of voices talking. A lot of distractions. What are you gonna look at? Because that will determine what you see. Keep your eyes up out of the mud.

Problems

Today I faced some problems, but it wasn’t within my ability to fix them.  So I just worked on myself.

Creativity

Creativity is the ability to capture a possibly for a particular time and convert it into reality.

The Uncomfortable Things

It's the uncomfortable things where you derive the most value from. The tasks you don't want to get to. The calls you don't feel like making. The workout you want to skip. Those are the very things you need to do. In them you will gain the most value.

It Can Change Fast

Things can change fast. The last six months of history has changed a lot and done so at light speed. This means don't even take things for granted. Things could get worse, and they could get worse fast. Gratefulness in every season and situation is one of the keys to health and happiness.

Tearing Down

Tearing things apart and dismantling things is in vogue right now. The problem with this as a mode of operation is, you should provide a better alternative to what you're tearing down. Something exists for a purpose, and maybe the purpose has changed. But providing something better or an alternate to learning things apart is far superior to just tearing things down.

Fixing The Bad

I'm hearing a lot about problems recently, but very few solutions. I haven't heard anyone start talking about people taking responsibility for their own selves in fixing these issues. The heart of each individual is where we truly need to fix issues. Instead of placing blame we should all look inward and fix ourselves.

Make Room

If you're heading somewhere good, make room for someone to come with you. Even someone you completely disagree with. Don't close the door and burn the bridge to them. Or else they will never come your way. Leave the bridge there and the door open so they can go with you where you're headed. Saying nasty things can easily destroy that bridge. Even if they're seemingly wrong, you don't have to burn the bridge and close the door. You can walk towards something better and invite them along. Make room for them to join you.

Fathers Day

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there.  Recent times have shown the importance of having a father or father figure in your life. Many of our current problems are in part related to fatherless homes.  Fathers, be present, be a leader, be an example, love your family.

It Becomes Work

Everything fun eventually becomes work. Once the honeymoon is over, it becomes work. Yes, I’m talking about marriage but I’m also talking about almost anything fun.  I’ve done three days at Disneyland, it’s a lot of fun. But you start getting tired and your legs get sore and it becomes work. The first day you’re so excited and would hardly notice any fatigue. But by day three, it looks closer to work than day one did.  Vacations are of course fun. But by the time you’re ready to go home, packing, flights, trains, etc, it becomes work.  You like cooking? Eventually if you do it often enough it becomes work.  You enjoy playing an instrument? If you play enough it becomes work.  This isn’t a bad thing though. You can have fun once things turn to work. Work doesn’t mean no fun. When things become work though is when you separate the dedicated or passionate from the casual.

The News

The news has been something else for all of the year 2020. Truthfully, it's been very difficult to ignore. I've spent an unusually amount of time consuming news this year. After all this consumption, I know one thing for sure, it hasn't improved my quality of life or thinking one bit. In fact the more I consume, the less my quality of thinking and life seems to go down. I'm not sure if I would be any worse off had I ignored the news all year to date. Just an interesting thing to consider :)

Gift Giving

Today was my wife and sisters birthday! Happy birthday to them both! It got me thinking about gifts. The best gifts we can give is of ourselves. Our time, our love and our care.  Those are the best gifts we can give.

Aim For Peace

"Wow, that escalated quickly" is a phrase I've said a few times this year to myself. Things can quickly escalate into violence and hate. It sometimes only takes one person or one situation to set off a war. Instead of fighting for a particular side, maybe we should aim for peace more often than not. Some things are definitely worth fighting for. But fighting for things that aren't worth it makes everyone a loser. Aim for peace rather than winning. (this thought was mostly stolen from a Jordan Peterson lecture)

Honesty The Superpower

Honesty is a superpower. Especially honesty to our selves. We’re the easiest person to lie to and the one it does most damage to.  Start by being honest with yourself.

Be An Extra Miler

We have really good neighbours. On either side of our house. Sometimes in the winter we will find our sidewalks all shovelled by one of them. They always shovel a few extra feet into our sidewalk to make it a bit easier on me. And I return the favour to them. They also help by cutting the lawn a bit into our yard and reducing my work! I notice and appreciate it. The go the extra bit and therefore I do to. It's like paying it forward. Be that type of a person. The person who always exceeds what's expected of them. Two things will happen: 1. You will get further than you would by just doing the bare minimum. 2. You will end up getting back what you've given and likely some extra. Go the extra mile when giving, it's always worth it.

Shaken

You will be shaken, and when that happens, who you really are will be revealed.  So work on being the best possible version of yourself.

Quietness

Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. - Ecclesiastes There’s not much worse than toiling and striving after something that isn’t relevant.  It’s easy to get caught up in every single thing that happens in your community, on the job or in the world.  But you may be striving after wind. You don’t have to engage in every issue.

The Best Ideas

I’m old enough to remember when different viewpoints was a good thing. Our society wants diversity of everything except thinking. Censorship by private corporations or by the government does little to overcome “bad” or “different” opinions. It only buries they where they can no longer be seen until they reappear in form of a violent revolution. The best arbitrator of ideas is the free and open market where bad ideas can be brought forward, debated and then superseded by a better idea. So share your ideas. And then listen to feedback. It may or not be a good idea. But you won't really know until it's been processed by people.

No Pain No Gain

Today I remembered the oft used phrase, “no pain, no gain”.  It’s impossible to get stronger without going throughout the pain or discomfort. It’s uncomfortable strengthening your cardio. It hurts to strengthen your muscles. You go through pain to strengthen your mind mind and emotions.  With all the pain in the world right now, there’s much opportunity for strengthening. Bonds of love can be strengthened. Resolve can be strengthened. Hurts can be mended and relationships strengthened.

Free Speech

Free speech is effectively gone. People are getting cancelled legally over for expressing an opinion. Even factual opinions are being shut down. But the most effective thing we can speak is love. And that’s not cancelled nor will be. You can always speak and show love. Even if you have to keep your opinion to yourself. You can still spread love.

Cancelled

We're living in cancel culture. I wonder if the future will belong to the cancelled. They will no longer have to worry about being cancelled and they can speak the truth more freely.

A Reminder About Complexity

A reminder that things are much more complex than we often realize. Take the current world focus on racism. You cannot come to a single sentence conclusion on the situation. It's complex and solutions are complex. Beware of people who have it all figured out. It likely means they don't really understand what's going on.

Get An Informed Opinion

Your opinion matters. But get an informed opinion. Don't regurgitate everything your friends are saying. Don't adopt the same opinion as the media has. Don't be pressured into an opinion. Don't be feared into an opinion. Come to an opinion based on doing your own research and thinking. When you let other people do your thinking we end up with something called group think. It's okay to share your closest friends' opinions, but make sure it's informed and been thought through. And learn how to articulate the opinion clearly. That's just as important. If you have an informed opinion, the best thing you can do is be persuasive and better yet, informative with it.

The Listening Advocate

I have often advocated on this blog for listening. It's super important. We learn a lot more when we listen. Here's two important things about how to listen: 1. We need to be willing to hear other opinions and ideas 2. We need speak and listen on both or all sides of a matter. You won't get a proper view without all sides being able to fairly speak and all sides intently listening.

Injustice

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

Court of Public Opinion

Being worried about what the court of public opinion will say is similar to being incarcerated. It’s a form of mental incarceration. We’ve never lived in a time where people are more afraid to speak out. Where people are so afraid to go against narratives. The best way to reach people on the other side of the narrative is through love and kindness.

Accountability

All humans need accountability. The people that reject accountability end up in horrible places. The people who accept accountability will become better people. Much better people.

Un-convincing Yourself

It's hard to un-convince yourself. And for good reason. The conclusions you've come to probably came through some real life experiences. It's hard to deprogram ourselves. How do we do it? The best way is by listening to others. And a diverse amount of others.

How Do We Get There From Here

We're hearing lots of pictures and stories about what should be.  Right now the most important questions are "how do we get there?". It's easy to point out what's wrong and how things should be. It's a lot more difficult to figure out how to get there.

Fighting

There's so much fighting happening in the world right now. But are people/me/we fighting the right thing(s)? Fighting makes things worse until we find the right thing(s) to fight. Then things can get better.

Heavy Heart

My heart is heavy for what’s going on in the world right now. If ever there’s been a time to show and spread love, it’s now.

Listeners and Talkers

I don't have much to say today. There's so much going on in the world and it's hard to make sense of it all. There's a whole lot of talkers and probably not enough listeners. Division will cause failure. So before taking sides, know it may be causing division.

Being Right

If you always have to be right, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. Newsflash: it's okay to be wrong. If you always have to be right you'll never learn.

Our Fears

What if we really examined our fears and checked their validity? We would find under scrutiny most of them wouldn’t hold up.  So scrutinize your fears.

Precedents

When we allow something, we set a precedent.  When we we resist something we set a precedent. A precedent always begets more of itself. So when we set a precedent we are setting a path for the future. Be extra careful in allowing something you've never allowed. Be extra careful in resisting things that could potentially help your future. Change isn't an enemy. But neither is holding onto certain values, systems, etc. Wisdom is the key in making change or not.

Unsaid

Many things are better left unsaid. You don't have to speak every thought that comes to your mind. You don't have to share every opinion you have. You don't have to correct every small thing that may be said or done around you. Wisdom more often is silence rather than words. And wise people's words are usually fewer and more valuable.

Cheating

Cheating has at least two major consequences: 1. It devalues the system that's been cheated. 2. It hurts the cheater. Cheating isn't a shortcut to what we want, it's a destructive process that hurts the cheater the most.

Fixated On One Thing

Something interesting has happened recently. The world world has been fixated on one thing, a virus. The virus has killed many people and is very serious. But when you fixate on one thing, you leave many more things neglected. The costs of the neglect usually aren't worth the fixation on the one thing. This goes beyond the current world situation. I think it applies to us on an individual level too.

Dance In The Rain

There’s songs and sayings about dancing in the rain. Today it rained a ton. It could depress some people. But you can always choose to dance in the rain. You will get wet, but doesn’t that beat being down? Ps. This means to dance when life rains on you too.

Why and How

When things don't go as we wish, we are often stuck asking ourself "why did this happen?". And that's a very important question to ask. There's often a lot to learn from mistakes or situations that have occurred. But we/me can often get stuck on that question. The better question is "how do I make the best of this situation?". Because looking back is only so helpful. But looking forward can be very helpful.

Exceptions

There’s almost always an exception. But you don’t create rules and policies or live life based off n the exceptions. You make decisions based on the greatest good for the greatest amount of people.

It Starts With Me

Taking ownership of things is empowering. If you don't like something, fix it. And you can by starting with yourself. You can't wait on the everyone else to change. Want a situation to change, start with "me". Want to change the world, start with "me". Want to improve your family, it start with "me". Want to improve your relationships, it starts with "me". The more you point the finger at others, the more you give away your power.

Only Bad Options

When you're left with only bad options, you've been letting something(s) slide for far too long. The longer you wait in some situations, the fewer good options you have left. But in some situations waiting is a good thing. If you can learn to read situations (to know which require quick decisions and which can have delayed decisions) you will always be in the drivers seat.

Your Message

If you have a message you're trying to communicate, you have to make sure you've connected with your audience first. If there's no connection, there's no communication.

The Art of Disagreement

In our current time, people can’t handle disagreement. Opposing ideas and thoughts are considered a threat. Opposing ideas should be a good thing amongst a mature group. Having different ideas is how you refine and make things better. But when the ability to engage in debate stops you stop having the refinement of ideas. And the ideas get worse. It’s values that should be most important in keeping us together. If you share the same values as someone else you should be able to handle different ideas.

Treated Wrong and Unfair

Guess what? Everyone has been and will be treated wrong. My oldest daughter likes to let me know when something isn’t fair. And I always agree with with her and let her know life isn’t fair. We can get so hung up on what’s not fair and who did us wrong. But that’s just a waste of time. You’ll be treated wrong and unfair things will happen. What’s that occurs. Move on.

Risk Adverse

You can't be risk adverse and be successful. The only thing you will be successful at is being mediocre. Life is full of risk taking. Taking your first step is a risk as a toddler. Going to University is a risk. Getting in a relationship is a risk. But if you don't take any of these risks, you'll never get anywhere.

Working Hard To Portray

People can tend to work so hard to portray an image. Somehow though the portrayal never comes off as genuine. We're better off figuring out how we are and being the best version of ourself possible. Don't try and portray you're something that you just aren't. It's wasted time and energy.

The House Next Door

The house next door was a deal. For over a year we had trucks shaking the ground, hammers and nails going, trades people coming and going and even a dangerous open excavation next to us. It was at best frustrating. And it went on often 7 days a week. You couldn't sit on the deck and enjoy a coffee or a nice afternoon without loud construction and people literally peering over you. But we ended up getting some really great neighbours. We couldn't ask for better neighbours. They're helpful, kind and look out for us. Sometimes you go through some real frustrating things. But in the end, you end up with some really great news things and people in your life.

Looking Back

Don’t look back, but know where you came from.

Mothers Day

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. I realize it’s not always a happy day for everyone. I’ve been fortunate to be around some amazing woman and mothers. I was brought up by a single mother who did an excellent job. Now I have a wife who is an amazing mother. I have two sisters who are excellent mothers too. I just want to express my gratitude for the mothers in my life!

We Need Each Other

One thing this pandemic has reminded me of is we need each other. We rely on each other more than we realize. Look how the global economy has changed. Look how your life has changed. It’s because everything is connected. And what I does eventually and ultimately effects you. And vice versa. We need each other. For friendship. For provisions. For keeping ourselves level. Every human is important. We need each other. More than ever we need each other.

Destruction Is Easy

In the last 2 months the United States has undone the last 10 years of job creation. It took 2 months to undo what took 10 years. Destruction is easy. It doesn't take as much effort to destruct something and it does to construct. This means we need to be extremely careful when destroying something. A lot went into creating it, and it will take a lot to rebuild. Make absolutely sure what you're doing is a net benefit.

Gratefulness

Being grateful has so many benefits. You could write a book about it. One benefit to highlight is people want to be around a grateful person. You want to have friends? Yes, be friendly. Also, be a grateful person that will make you more interesting than just a friendly person.

Fear

Fear is the greatest inhibitor there is. Fear reduces extraordinary people into something far beneath their purpose. Fear steals life. Fear steals joy. Fear steals purpose. Fear steals friendships and relationships. The good news is though: fear is a liar. Call fear out on it’s lies. Don’t let it get away with robbing you of who you are.

Barriers

Something bad has happened recently beyond the Covid-19 virus that has swept the globe. There is an abundance of barriers now. There's physical barriers, psychological barriers and social barriers. This is maybe the worst and most damaging thing to happen throughout the whole process. Barriers at checkouts, barriers covering peoples smiles, barriers of connection like a handshake, barriers of fear between people. It's time to break down as many barriers as possible. Maybe some of the barriers can't be removed quite yet, but we have to make sure we remove social barriers. The last thing that needs to happen is for people to further distance themselves from one another. We need to be closer than ever to move forward. The good news is, love is the most powerful force on earth. Use that force to its fullest right now.

My Energy

The things that want to steal my energy usually aren’t worth it. You have to be intentional with your energy. And put it toward things that matter.

So Much Going On

There’s so much going on in the world right now. It’s easy to get distracted from the priorities. Make sure you’re keeping your priorities right.

Division

Division is one of the greatest tactics of an enemy. We can’t afford to let unimportant things divide us. A house divided against itself will fall.

Better Version Of You

Are you a better version of yourself than you were in January? I think this recent crisis could have two opposite effects on people. 1. You can give in to your bad tendencies 2. You can push yourself to find ways to keep growing So, what have you done with nearly 8 weeks of being home?

Saying Something Bad

Saying something bad about someone else never helps anything. Only unless people need to be aware of a dangerous person of course. By saying something bad about someone we’re not contributing anything to society. Inject positivity, the world doesn’t need any more character assassinations. Let’s build people up.

Numbers

Something I've re-learned with Covid-19 is this: numbers can lie. There's a saying that says the numbers don't lie. But that's not accurate. You can twist numbers to say what you want them to say.

Sometimes You Don't Get It Right The First Time

Sometimes you don't get it right your first try. Or second or third. Edison took over 3000 designs to get to a workable light bulb. Were the first 2999 tries a waste? Of course not. Don't be hard on yourself when you don't get it right. Just try again. Don't be so hard on others when they don't get it right too. Let them try again. There's something to glean the entire journey. Every loss can be a lesson.

The Accelerator

I've seen it said the this COVID19 crisis is acting like an accelerator. They've said that it's accelerating businesses to move into technology faster than before. It's also accelerating the decline of things. Things that were going to fail in five to ten years are now going to fail in one. If this is accelerating some failures on your part, you need to change those things or habits immediately. If you see a failure approaching, try changing those habits immediately. On the other side, put into place some things that will accelerate positively. Learn a technology or skill that will be in demand going forward.

The Ultimate Tragedy

Heard this quote on IG tonight :) "The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people." - Martin Luther King

Intent

It's so easy to know why someone did or said something. At least we think it is. For example, "they said that to make me look bad" or "they did that to show me up". We think we instantly know another persons intent behind their words or actions. But it's not that easy. Even if you consider yourself intuitive. Intent is extremely hard to know. Consider this, sometimes we don't even know why we've done something. How many times have you asked yourself "why did I just do that?" or "why did I just say that?". And oftentimes we don't have a good answer for our behaviour. Knowing that, how much harder is it for us to judge the intentions of someone else? Most people act in good faith. So assuming they're out to get you, or they're out to cause problems is usually the wrong assumption. Plus it's a horrible way of living. Why spend your time figuring out the evil intents of every other human being? Just worry abo...

Saying It

What you say matters. Very very much! But how you say it may matter more. I'm learning that how you say something in written form is even more challenging to communicate clearly. Written communication lacks all the non-verbal communication that happens face to face. So it's easy for the message to be missed or misconstrued.

The Need For Critical Thinking

Never in my lifetime have I seen greater need for critical thinking. You can choose your position and cherry pick your facts. There's an abundance of facts. It's easy to adopt the popular narrative or the narrative of your closest circle. Practice critical thinking, if you get good at it you will have a huge advantage. How to practice: - Learn to emotionally detach from controversial issues and examine them. - Learn to identify bias and filter data and opionion knowing the bias. - Learn to analyze data. You can make many different assumptions from the same data set. You can even make quite contrary assumptions from the same data set. - Learn to listen to opinions different from yours. It doesn't mean you have to accept them, but learn to listen to them and sort fact from fiction, good idea from bad idea. - Read, read, read and then listen, listen, listen. Then learn to articulate your view in writing or orally.

Faith

Why is faith so important? Yes, faith from a religious point of view, but even non-religious "faith". This quote sums is up quite well. "Sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith." -Margaret Shepherd Many times in life we come up against what feels or seems like a brick wall. And sometimes only faith will take us forward. Or maybe more often, faith is the only thing that will get us going on our journey.

Death To Life

I finally raked up my leaves today from last fall. They're dead. Twice dead actually. But raking those leaves up today will allow the grass below to live. We're uncomfortable when something we're familiar with changes or passes. But with every change or every "death" of something, something new will be born. It hurts to see something go, but it's necessary for new to come. There's gonna be lot's of changes coming in the near future in the world. Out of all this bad, look for good to eventually find it's way out.

Courage

Sometimes courage isn’t big, flashy and daring. Sometimes courage is seemingly small and may fly under the radar. For someone, courage may be just showing up. Courage for someone else may be trusting again. Courage may be someone sharing their art. Courage could be sharing a weakness. Be courageous. And allow others to be courageous through your love.

Our Own Interests

By in large we act in our own best interests. And of course that's not a bad thing. It's called survival. I wonder though what it would look like if we acted in the best interests of everyone around us though. I suspect many of our behaviours would be different.

Good News

The good news in everything is simply that good always wins. Evil may triumph for a time, but good always wins. That's why it's so important to always try and find the good in everything. Because it's a lifeline you can hold onto that will eventually lead to better things.

I Dare You

Image
This post is a copy + paste from Ashley T'neil Walea on her Instagram today (@ashleytneil): So many things had happened to bring me to that point. A series of doors slammed in my face that left me feeling so hurt and so broken. Ten years of pouring myself into a job that I loved more than life - door closed. The path I thought I was supposed to be on brought me to a dead end with no light at the end of the tunnel. April 16, 2018, I stepped into a room clad with blue walls and white desks with two words written on the dry erase board - Be Essential. Two years ago I began my journey with IBM. Fast forward to April 16, 2020 - I’m helping provide my set of clients - the Government, the Military, State Governments, Local Governments, Universities, and Hospitals - with the technology to combat COVID-19. How am I thriving in a world where I never thought I would be in and still feel dismissed from the only world I thought I’d be in? Joseph came to mind. He grew up part of an amazing...

Complex and Simple Problems

I think complex problems require more complex fixes.  Simple problems usually require simple fixes.  Of course this isn’t a hard and fast rule, but I think it’s usually correct.  When you try to fix a complex problem with a simple solution it usually isn’t sufficient.  When you try and fix a simple problem with a complex solution you often end up creating a bigger problem.  The lesson? Spend lots of time fixing complex problems.  Don’t overcomplicate the fix to simple problems.

Be Thinking About The Exit

As long as this has dragged on, this lockdown will end. It's time to think about what we want that to look like. Do you want to go back to the exact status quo? I think there's some things I want to do differently coming out of what we've been through. Some things to consider for when "normal" life resumes: - Were your investments and savings adequate? - Did you have enough friendships and relationships in place to get through the lockdown? - Are you current career related skills a good match for the current environment? And how can you further them? - Is your health where it should be?

Being Smart

One good definition of being smart would be: The ability to discard one of your present ideas/values/truths when presented with a better one. So many people are unwilling to discard what they think/know/value, even when presented with a better alternative. (Yes, there are for sure some unalterable and uncompromisable values)

The Easter Story

The Easter story is largely about resurrection. Even if you're not religious it's a reminder about death. But not just that everything has an end and we're all gonna die. But rather, it reminds us that an end isn’t an end, it’s a new beginning.

A List of Good

Right now it's difficult to find all the good. I could write a much longer list than this of bad things happening. But there's a lot of good things happening, I just have to look harder. Here's a list in no particular order: - People are coming together in new ways. For example, people are volunteering to pickup and drop-off groceries to elderly people who are at risk for this Covid-19 virus. - Many companies are offering discounts and delivery services. - The medical community is working together like never before. There will be benefits from this going forward. - People are being forced to embrace technology in order to keep connected to others. This will help them once this is over. - Companies are adopting better technologies that allows their workers to work from home, which should help offer better work/life balance in the future. - Churches are starting to adopt technology are social media who maybe would not have previously. This is good because most church...
